Engaging the next generation of language learners
Over the next couple of weeks, the Worldwise Learning Centre will be filled with the next generation of language-learning enthusiasts, with the Centre welcoming local pupils to the Worldwise Skills Event for Schools. The event aims to engage pupils by introducing them to the wide and varied possibilities that are available through language learning, with a number of practical and interactive activities for the pupils to get involved with.
The pupils will get the chance to try out the state- of-the-art conference interpreting suites (equipped with industry standard Brähler equipment) by having a go at simultaneous interpreting with a professional interpreter. There will also be an opportunity to get to grips with Rosetta Stone – a world-leading language learning software in 18 different languages! After a well-deserved break and refreshments in the Worldwise Café, the pupils will get the opportunity to learn about different writing systems around the world, including Russian, Greek, Japanese and Korean and will get the chance to try these out themselves. The final session consists of an Interactive Worldwise Quiz which will test the pupils’ knowledge about world languages and cultures with the winner receiving a prize.
The Worldwise Skills Event is taking place on the 3rd and 10th of May, and is just one of the initiatives designed by Worldwise to introduce students to the possibilities of language learning at a young age. Worldwise will also be running sessions as part of Junior University 2013, which is a UCLan led event aimed at giving high-school students a flavour of what to expect from higher education. For anyone who would like to find out more about the language learning opportunities that are available at the Centre, Worldwise will be attending this year’s Chinese Kite and Culture Festival which is taking place on the 11th of May in Avenham Park, Preston. The event is free of charge and will feature a magnificent display of colourful Chinese kites, as well as an exciting programme of Chinese related events, including the chance to sample traditional Chinese cuisine. We hope to see you there!
